About The Humble Toast
Self-described “new school deli” The Humble Toast has been delivering its artisanal sandwich experience to Teaneck for years. Now under new ownership (along with its sister dairy restaurant, La Cucina di Nava), The Humble Toast is still delivering the same great food and service its loyal fans have come to expect, but with a reinvigorated passion for culinary creativity and artistry. The food may be “humble”, but the process behind it is anything but — corned beef and pastrami are cured and smoked in-house, burgers are ground and hand-formed daily, and everything from the sauerkraut to the beef bacon is crafted with care from scratch.
The menu at The Humble Toast is expansive and traverses territory that lies far beyond predictable Jewish deli fare. As advertised, the focus here is on the humble sandwich, but the menu celebrates the simple bread-and-filling staple in virtually all of its forms. Sure, you can get a classic deli sandwich here, like pastrami (The Irving) or corned beef (The Elaine) on marble rye, and you can of course order an overstuffed Italian Hoagie, an old favorite French Dip, or a crispy breaded Schnitzel on a brioche bun. But for those craving a more exotic sandwich experience, The Humble Toast offers a pressed-baguette Little Havana Cuban, a beer-battered and fried Spicy Southern Chicken sandwich, and even a tortilla-based sandwich in the form of the Grilled Chicken Quesadilla, made with pico de gallo, guacamole, and vegan “cheese.” Here, even the humble Burger may be played safe with lettuce, tomato, and pickles, or topped with more adventurous accompaniments like guacamole, mushrooms with rosemary and truffle oil, or pickled jalapeños.
As impressive as the sandwich list is, The Humble Toast offers perhaps even more non-sandwich options, including not only rice and poke bowls, a trio of healthy wraps, and an array of delicious salads, but also shredded-beef and vegan-cheese Neurotic Nachos, Shredded Beef Tacos, Chili “Cheese” Fries, and Mexican Street Corn. For the main course, there is 16oz Rib-Eye, a Cajun-rubbed Blackened Center Cut Salmon fillet, and Smoked Baby Chicken with garlic smashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. A “youngsters” menu offers not only sliders, but also fried chicken tenders or an all-beef hot dog, all served with fries.
The Humble Toast is NOT — as they proudly proclaim — your bubbie’s deli. This gem is instead a culinary adventure that takes the humble sandwich, as well as many other traditional favorites, soaring to new heights.
