About Bagels & Co.: Upper East Side

Bagels — and a Whole Lot More — in the City.

With two locations serving both the Upper East and West Sides of Manhattan since 2015, Bagels & Co. is about three things: simplicity, quality, and tradition. Everything on the extensive menu — which includes a lot more than just bagels — is made fresh on the premises daily, using simple local ingredients and tried and true traditional recipes.

As you would expect, the bagels (and bialys) are the star attraction here and come in over a dozen fresh-baked varieties. There are also over a dozen cream cheese options, including not only your typical favorites like vegetable, scallion, and blueberry, but also more adventurous options like hot pepper, kalamata olive, and chocolate chip — there are even three parve cream “cheese” options on offer. For a more substantial meal, you can turn your bagel (or a perfectly flaky, house-baked croissant) into a sandwich, piled high with egg and cheese, tuna or whitefish salad, Nova Scotia salmon, egg salad, hummus or baba ganoush, or Spanish eggplant.

The bagels here are definitely top-notch, but the name of the place is Bagels “& Co.”, and the bagels have plenty of “company” on this menu. A small Israeli menu offers Falafel and Malawach; appetizers include Onion Rings and Potato Cigars; several wraps and paninis are available; and there are a nice variety of salads, bowls, soups, and baked goodies to choose from as well — and that’s all before you get to the second page of the menu, which shifts the focus from bagel breakfast to Italian lunch. Here you will find fifteen different pizza options — ranging from the traditional Marinara or White to more sophisticated combinations like Eggplant Caponata or Spinach Ricotta — all available by the 20” pie or by the slice. There are also calzones, fish dishes, a veggie burger, and five different pastas to choose from.

There’s an old saying that goes (at least as I remember it): “a bagel’s reputation is determined by the company it keeps.” At Bagels & Co., the bagels have earned their stellar reputation all by themselves, but the company they keep certainly isn’t hurting their cause, either. Everything here is a deliciously satisfying combination of simplicity, quality, and tradition, and you really can’t go wrong with any order. Both Bagels & Co. locations provide catering and delivery and are open for dine-in Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
