About Brooklyn Pizza

Denver, Colorado, is a fantastic destination for the outdoorsy types. Known as Mile High City, it’s home to the Rocky Mountains, which are famous for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. The Jewish Community in Denver is constantly growing, and it owes a lot to Rabbi Isaac Wasserman, who cofounded the Yeshiva Toras Chaim on the Westside Denver with Rabbi Kagan. His son, Rabbi Aaron Wasserman, later founded the Jewish Experience, a local Kiruv organization. Between the Jewish locals and the seasonal tourism, Rabbi Aaron Wasserman knew something was missing in Denver; Jews needed a place to chow down. Wasserman recruited frum chef and Colorado native David Lustig, sending him to J2 in Lakewood so he could learn the ins and outs of making authentic New York-style pizza. Lustig brought everything he learned back to Colorado and, in collaboration with The Jewish Experience, opened Brooklyn Pizza in 2013 as an ode to pizza from New York.

Brooklyn Pizza, the only kosher pizza shop in a 1000-mile radius, is just 20 minutes from the airport. It is also proud to be a non-profit community pizza shop; that’s not something you’ll see in Brooklyn. Those who knew David Lustig well say he ran Brooklyn Pizza like a local Rabbi runs a shul. The pizza shop counted on the community to flourish, and the community knew that Brooklyn Pizza and Lustig would be there in a pinch if they needed. Sadly, after battling health issues, Lustig passed in 2021, but his legacy lives on. Now the place is run by Adin Alpern who previously ran a kosher pizza place in Brooklyn.  It’s still a non-profit in partnership with the Jewish Experience.

Menu items at Brooklyn Pizza are named after iconic neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The plain cheese pizza, known as the Coney Island Pizza, is a top seller, as is the Crown Heights Pizza (a veggie combo) and the Bensonhurst Pizza (House Sicilian). Brooklyn pizza has a deep fryer, and while they carry traditional pizza shop fare such as French fries, they also have southern fried pickles and deep-fried avocado. The fish in their Fish & Chips varies from tilapia to wild-caught salmon, and their house salad features “chicken” nuggets. They have sandwiches, wraps, and, coming soon, breakfast burritos.

People may travel from all over for the Rockies, but Jews also travel from California for pizza. Their reputation comes from the warm community feeling as much as it does the food. When you’re at Brooklyn Pizza, you are a part of the Denver Jewish community.
